Bandar Seri Begawan - Four teenagers below the age of 18, including a girl, were amongst 31 who were issued with compound fines for smoking in prohibited areas, which is punishable under Chapter 14, Tobacco Act 2005.
A number of operations were conducted by the Enforcement Unit, Tobacco Prevention Section under the Ministry of Health.
The operations were held last weekend in public places in the Gadong area and the vicinity of Jalan Batu Satu, and the offenders were slapped with $150 compound fine each.
The teenagers will undergo a counselling programme with the cooperation of their parents and guardians concerned.
Those caught were found smoking in prohibited areas including a number of shops, shopping centres, a market, an open market, bus station, bus stop, a restaurant, eatery as well as a number of government buildings.
The Ministry of Health has again reminded the public that anyone found smoking in the prohibited areas under the Tobacco Act 2005 and its regulations of 2007 will be slapped with a compound fine of $150 for a first offence, $300 for the second offence, and if found repeating on a regular basis will face the court and a fine of up to $1,000.
Last year, 201 compound fines were issued in the country.

Kuala Belait - The Belait District is looking to hog the limelight again, this time by organising Brunei’s own version of The Amazing Race, “Xplore Brunei”, on June 7-12.
Calling a meeting yesterday with various government agencies and travel agents, Belait District Officer Matusin Orang Kaya Sura Hj Tuba hopes the competition will attract about 70 pairs of participants, both locally and internationally.
Participants, in teams of two people, will start off from the Belait District, before moving on to the Brunei-Muara District, Tutong District, Temburong District, in that order, before returning to Belait.
Each district will have two “pit stops”, with Belait, being the starting and ending point, having four pit stops.
Participants must be 16 years old and above. Each team will pay a participation fee of $300.
Should the participants in a team consist of male and female, they will need to have a legal relationship, for example siblings, cousins, husband and wife, etc, in order to form a team.
Cash prizes at stake are $5,000 (1st), $4,000 (2nd), $3,000 (3rd), $1,000 (4th), $500 (5th), $400 (6th), and $300 (7th), respectively. Those not in the top seven will get plaque and certificates.
Asked if foreigners and Bruneians will be separated into different categories, considering locals will have an advantage over participants from other countries, Matusin gave a definite no.
“The places that are under consideration now, even Bruneians will not know. There will be no advantage whatsoever, because those places are the secret places of Brunei,” said the district officer jokingly.
One of the important components of organising “Xplore Brunei” is the cooperation of tour operators, as the district office is looking at having foreigners making up 1/3 of the participants.
Michael Song, Manager of Pan Bright Travel Service, said that they will promote the package to their overseas partners.
“We will be informing our partners in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other cities in China to promote the competition,” said Song.
The deadline for entry submission is May 31, 2011. Interested parties can contact the Belait District Office at 3331848, or email JDB.PerhubunganAwam@live.com — Courtesy of The Brunei Times
Care and Actions for Strays, or CAS, for short, were set up to improve the live of strays in Brunei.
Their mission is to educate the public the importance of spaying/neutering to control pet overpopulation, against animals’ abuse, killings, poisoning and pets ownerships’ responsibility, as there are many Bruneians who are still ignorant about Animal Welfare. They aim to educate as many people as possible.
You can adopt a pet from CAS by browsing their photo album via Facebook
or you can also donate siam rice, pet shampoos, pet foods, etc to them. All you have to do is to send an email to care.actionsforstrays@gmail.com about it.
Happy browsing (and adopting!) :-)
Here’s to another great day ahead! :-)
